題 目: | Superconductivity – Rising to the Energy Challenges |
概要:
Superconductors offer powerful opportunities for increasing capacity, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity grid, and storing massive energy to address the mismatch between variation of renewable energy resources and electricity demand. Superconducting magnet energy storage systems (SMES) can store electricity with near zero energy loss, and have instantaneous dynamic response. Superconducting coils can provide a lower cost alternative to the rare-earth permanent magnet or geared systems for high power (> 10 MW) direct-drive wind turbines. In this presentation, I will give a review of applied superconductivity projects currently carried out at Brookhaven National Laboratory with its collaborators, and discuss recent advances in high performance 2G HTS wire development enabling superconductor technology moving from civilian domain to military domain.
At fundamental level, stronger impact of superconductivity to energy technology requires stronger basic science research.
I will briefly discuss the superconducting materials program at Brookhaven Laboratory, as well as at the Center of Emergent Superconductivity (an Energy Frontier Research Center) helping to facilitate rapid transition from basic science discovery to technology deployment.
